The Cameroon Red Baboon (Hysterocrates gigas) is a large Old World fossorial tarantula from Cameroon. It is a powerful burrower with a strong feeding response and is best suited to experienced keepers.
Behavior and Temperament: Fast, defensive and usually reclusive. It commonly retreats to its burrow but can posture or bite if cornered.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Provide a secure fossorial setup with deep, compactable substrate, a starter burrow or hide, a full water dish and good ventilation. Keep the lower substrate slightly damp rather than waterlogged.
Feeding: Feed appropriately sized crickets, roaches and other suitable feeder insects.
Additional Information: This Old World species lacks urticating hairs and relies on speed, defensive posturing and biting for defence.
