The Indian Ornamental (Poecilotheria regalis) is pure elegance wrapped in lightning. One of the crown jewels of arboreal tarantulas, this species is fast, bold, drop-dead gorgeous, and definitely not for beginners β€” but if you respect her space, she’s one of the most impressive spiders in the hobby.

Quick Facts

Common Name: Indian Ornamental

Scientific Name: Poecilotheria regalis

Origin: India β€” particularly southern forest regions

Size: Up to 7–8 inches (18–20 cm) leg span

Lifespan:

  • Females: ~12–15 years
  • Males: ~3–4 years

Temperament: Defensive and fast β€” not aggressive, but will bolt or pose if cornered

Coloration:

  • White and slate-gray leg patterns, almost floral
  • Vivid yellow flashes on the underside of the legs (used in threat displays)
  • Beautiful black-and-white banding on the carapace

Housing

Enclosure Type: Arboreal β€” tall enclosure with vertical cork bark

Substrate: Just enough to hold humidity (1–2 inches of coco fiber or similar)

Humidity: 65–75%

Temperature: 75–82Β°F (24–28Β°C)

Decor:

  • Vertical cork bark slab (absolutely essential)
  • Fake leaves, branches, web anchors
  • Water dish on floor or attached to side

Pro Tip: Add good cross-ventilation β€” P. regalis needs airflow to prevent mold and respiratory issues.

Feeding

Diet: Roaches, crickets, mealworms, hornworms

Feeding Frequency:

  • Slings: 2–3x/week
  • Juveniles: Weekly
  • Adults: Every 10–14 days

Can tackle prey almost their size β€” they’re extremely efficient predators

Big Warnings

Venom is medically significant (stronger than most New World species β€” not deadly, but painful)

Very fast β€” teleport-level fast β€” and known to bolt unpredictably

Absolutely not a handling species

Rehousing can be spicy if not done carefully
