Small but mighty. The Trinidad Dwarf Tiger is a fan-favorite among dwarf species for its lightning-fast growth, bold tiger-striped abdomen, and surprisingly manageable nature. Perfect for keepers who love a tiny tarantula with a ton of character packed into just a few centimeters.

Quick Facts

Common Name: Trinidad Dwarf Tiger

Scientific Name: Cyriocosmus elegans

Origin: Trinidad & Venezuela

Size: 1.5–2 inches (3.8–5 cm) leg span

Lifespan:

  • Females: ~10–12 years
  • Males: 2–3 years

Temperament: Skittish but not defensive β€” quick but rarely aggressive

Coloration

Jet-black or dark brown carapace

Bright metallic copper-gold patch on the abdomen

Bold black-and-white β€œtiger” striping on the abdomen β€” flashy for such a tiny species

Juveniles already show adult coloration early on

Housing & Care

Enclosure Type: Terrestrial with light burrowing/tunneling habits

Substrate: 2–3 inches of moist coco fiber/topsoil mix

Humidity: 70–80% β€” keep substrate slightly damp

Temperature: 72–78Β°F (22–25Β°C)

Decor:

  • Small cork bark hide, moss, and leaf litter
  • Tiny water dish or regular misting (they drink from droplets)
  • Compact enclosure β€” they don’t need much space, just depth and security

A secure enclosure is a must β€” they’re small and fast!

Feeding

Diet: Pinhead crickets, fruit flies, micro roaches

Feeding Schedule:

  • Slings: 2–3x/week
  • Juveniles: Weekly
  • Adults: Weekly

Fast, enthusiastic eaters β€” great feeders for their size

Why It’s a Gem

One of the smallest tarantulas in the hobby

Gorgeous pattern β€” tiger-striped butt with metallic highlights

Fast growers β€” mature quickly compared to many species

Generally calm and easy to manage (for a dwarf!)

Ideal for folks with limited space or who love micros

Notes

Extremely small β€” best viewed up close or under a magnifier

Not for handling β€” too delicate and quick

Needs moisture and ventilation balance

May web over the entire enclosure if it feels secure (very cute)
