Not for the faint of heart, Stromatopelma calceatum is a stunning old-world arboreal tarantula from West Africa, famous for its lightning speed, ghostly white leg striping, and serious attitude. It’s a high-risk, high-reward species — strictly look, don’t touch.

Quick Facts

Common Name: Featherleg Baboon

Scientific Name: Stromatopelma calceatum

Origin: West Africa (Sierra Leone, Ghana, Togo)

Size: 5–6 inches (12–15 cm) leg span

Lifespan:

  • Females: 10–15 years
  • Males: 3–5 years

Temperament: Extremely defensive, ultra-fast, highly reclusive

Coloration

Pale golden to sandy base color

Black and white “feathered” striping on the legs

Bold, dark abdominal patterning (can resemble a leaf or net)

Beautiful but built for ambush, not showing off

Housing & Care

Enclosure Type: Arboreal — vertical space + hide required

Substrate: 2–3 inches of moist substrate at the bottom

Humidity: 65–75% — mist lightly, don't soak

Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

Decor:

  • Cork bark tube or vertical hide (absolute must!)
  • Leaf litter, moss, and lots of anchor points for heavy webbing
  • Secure, escape-proof enclosure — no gaps!

Will build intricate web tunnels and "tree fort" hideouts near the top of the enclosure.

Feeding

Diet: Crickets, roaches, mealworms, occasional locusts

Feeding Schedule:

  • Slings: 2–3x/week
  • Juveniles: Weekly
  • Adults: Every 7–10 days

Very aggressive feeder — fast ambush attacks

Why It’s a Thrill to Keep

Gorgeous, unique feathered leg patterns

Heavy, artistic webbing behavior

Exciting (if nerve-wracking) feeding response

Compact size but big personality

Very hardy once established — low fuss if left alone

Notes

NOT a handling species — dangerously fast and prone to bolting

Strong bite potential — medically significant, painful old-world venom

Needs a secure enclosure and caution during maintenance

Very reclusive — usually stays hidden in web tunnels until nightfall
