Massive and moody, Phormictopus cancerides is one of the largest tarantulas from the Caribbean region. With a hefty build, iridescent sheen, and explosive feeding style, it’s a showstopper — but not for the faint of heart. Great for experienced keepers who want a serious presence in their collection.

Lifespan:

Temperament: Defensive, fast, and not afraid to throw threats — handle with your eyes only


Coloration

Earthy brown base with a subtle purple or bronze iridescence

Young specimens may appear dull but get a glossy shine with age

Thick-legged and heavily built — a true tank of a tarantula

Some regional variations show hints of green or violet tones


Housing & Care

Enclosure Type: Terrestrial — bulldozer behavior likely

Substrate: 5–6 inches of slightly moist substrate (holds tunnels well)

Humidity: 70–80% — keep well-hydrated, especially for slings

Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

Decor:

  • Deep substrate with a sturdy hide (or let it bulldoze its own)
  • Moss, bark, and a large water dish
  • Secure lid — this species is powerful and can climb if stressed

Will rearrange decor, web over surfaces, and dig extensively if conditions are right.


Feeding

Diet: Crickets, roaches, superworms — can handle large prey

Feeding Schedule:
