One of the largest and fastest-growing tarantulas in the hobby, Lasiodora parahybana is famous for its huge size, gentle reputation (for a giant), and soft salmon-pink hairs. Hardy and impressive, this species is a favorite among keepers who want a true giant without extreme care demands.

Quick Facts

Common Name: Salmon Pink Birdeater

Scientific Name: Lasiodora parahybana

Origin: Northeastern Brazil

Habitat Type: Terrestrial

Size: 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) leg span

Lifespan:

  • Females: 15–20+ years
  • Males: 4–6 years

Temperament: Generally calm but skittish; may flick hairs when threatened

Coloration

Brown to dark brown body

Soft pinkish-salmon hairs on legs and abdomen

Carapace often shows a warm golden or rose sheen

Juveniles appear darker and develop pink tones as they grow

After a fresh molt, the pink coloration is especially vibrant.

Housing

Enclosure Type: Terrestrial — large floor space is essential

Substrate: 4–6 inches of slightly moist substrate (coco fiber/topsoil mix)

Humidity: 65–75%

Temperature: 72–80°F (22–27°C)

Decor:

  • Large cork bark hide or slab
  • Leaf litter
  • Wide water dish (they drink often)

Despite their size, they are not heavy burrowers — more surface dwellers with shallow scrapes.

Feeding

Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, superworms

Feeding Frequency:

  • Slings: 2–3x per week (grow VERY fast)
  • Juveniles: Weekly
  • Adults: Every 10–14 days

Extremely food-motivated — expect powerful feeding responses
